Atalanta BC (BC stands for Bergamasca Calcio) were established in 1907, this was a result of a merger with another club called, Bergamasca. The club joined the Italian league in 1929 and have won Serie B on many occasions, but they are still waiting for their first Serie A victory.
Atalanta has won Coppa Italia once, in 1963 and reached the semi-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1988, when they were still competing in Serie B. This is still the best ever performance by a non-first division club in a major UEFA competition; they have also been runners-up in the same tournament twice. The name of the club is taken after a goddess in Greek mythology, that’s also where Atalanta’s nickname La Dea comes from, meaning the goddess.
Atalanta shares a fierce rivalry with nearby club Brescia. Meetings between the clubs are also known as the Derby Lombardo (Lombard Derby), this rivalry dates back to the middle ages when Bergamo bought up some land put up for sale by Brescia. This led to several armed conflicts between the two, although the conflict ended after they became unified under the kingdom of Italy in 1861. Still, the rivalry remains.
Atalanta plays their home games at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia, for sponsorship reasons now known as the Gewiss Stadium. The stadium is located in the city of Bergamo and has a capacity of 21,000.
In May 2017, Atalanta became one of four Serie A clubs to own its own stadium when they bought it for 8.6 million Euros from the city government. This gave them the opportunity to renovate the outdated stadium so they could meet the requirements of UEFA. Atalanta had to play its Champions League home matches in their debut season at the San Siro in Milan, as their stadium wasn’t ready to use at that time. Thanks to the additional capacity of San Siro, Atalanta recorded its record home attendance of 44,236 during a Champions League knockout stage match against Valencia on 19th February 2020
