Atlético Madrid or simply known as Atlético or Atleti, is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid that plays in La Liga. Atlético Madrid are the third most successful club in Spanish football behind Real Madrid and Barcelona. Throughout their history the club has been known by a number of nicknames, including Los Colchoneros (“The Mattress Makers”), Atleti and Los Indios, which some attribute to the club’s signing several South American players after the restrictions on signing foreign players were lifted.
Atleti’s latest success was on 22nd May 2021 with a 2–1 win at the José Zorrilla Stadium against Valladolid, this secured the La Liga title for Atlético, only seven years after their last triumph. Atlético have never won the Champions League, although they have reached the final on three occasions, losing narrowly to Real Madrid in two of those.
El Derbi Madrileño, or simply El Derbi, is the name given to football matches between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, both from Madrid and one of the most bitter matches in La Liga. In the modern era, the Madrid derby is the second biggest derby in Spanish football, behind El Clásico.
Riyadh Air Metropolitano has been the new stadium of Atletico Madrid since 2017. It replaced Estadio Vicente Calderon, which lacked possibilities for expansion and modernisation. While the stadium was designed as a football-specific stadium with the stands close to the pitch, plans allowed for the temporary construction of an athletics track on top of the lower tier. The stadium had a capacity of 20,000 spectators upon its closure and re-opened with a seating capacity of 68,456 after renovation. Riyadh Air Metropolitano officially opened on 16th September 2017 with a league match between Atletico and Malaga (1-0).
