The Foro Italico is a sports complex in Rome. It was built in 1928, with the aim of organising the 1940 Olympic Games here but that didn’t happen because of the war. During this fascist period in Italy, the place was called Foro Mussolini. In 1960 the Olympic Games were finally held there, after some renovations.
The stadium also underwent a renovation in 2010. With the expansion of the stadium, the centre court now has a capacity of 10,400 spectators.
The Italian tennis tournament was first held in Milan in 1930. From 1935 onwards, the tournament was organised for the first time at the Foro Italico sports complex in Rome. The Italian Open became open to professional tennis players from 1969. In 1990 the Italian Open became an ATP tournament.
With 10 titles, Rafael Nadal holds the most singles titles at the Italian Open. In the women’s category it is the American Chris Evert, who won the tournament five times.
