In 1884, the current Leicester City saw the light of day under the name Leicester Fosse. A name that referred to playing on the Fosse Road. After the club’s bankruptcy in 1919, a restart was made under the name Leicester City Football Club. Until 2010, the club played alternately in the Premier League and the EFL Championship.
In 2010, the club was taken over by wealthy businessman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Under his leadership, the club managed to force promotion to the Premier League in 2014. The big success came in 2016: led by club top scorer Jamie Vardy, The Foxes managed to capture the Premier League title. An unprecedented success! In 2021, the club managed to add the FA Cup and Community Shield to its record. This season, the Foxes play in the Premier League again, after one season in the Championship.
East Midlands derby
Leicester City‘s biggest rival is his neighbour Nottingham Forest. Both clubs are located in the English region known as the East Midlands. The derby is therefore also known as the East Midlands Derby. On 9th February 1901, both clubs faced each other for the first time in the FA Cup. Nottingham Forest drew the longer straw, beating the Leicester club 5-1. The biggest defeat in this derby was suffered by Leicester City. On 21 April 1909, The Foxes were beaten a whopping 12-0 by The Tricky Trees.
After 111 years of playing its game at Filbert Street, which had served as Leicester City’s home ground since 1891, the club moved in 2002. The Foxes chose the Walkers Stadium, located a few hundred meters away, with a capacity of 32,500 spectators. In 2010, the club and the stadium were taken over by Thai company King Power. The name of the stadium was changed to the King Power Stadium after the takeover.
