If you like clubs with tradition, Newcastle United has it in spades. Since their foundation in 1892, they have won four League titles and six FA Cups, which make them one of the most successful English clubs of all time.
Newcastle United was formed through the merger of two older Tyneside clubs: Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. It wouldn’t take long for Newcastle to become known for its quick and attractive football. After World War II, the club bounced back. Led by future club legend Jackie Milburn, Newcastle returned to the top-flight in 1948 and won three FA Cups between 1951 and 1955, in a streak that would earn them a reputation as Cup specialists.
In the early 90s, the club once again made a comeback by appointing Kevin Keegan as manager. After hitting the jackpot with big signings such as David Ginola and Alan Shearer, Newcastle almost ended up overthrowing Manchester United by finishing as runner-up in 1996 and 1997.
Newcastle United’s biggest rival is local club Sunderland, this game is also known as the Tyne-Wear derby. These two sides have been fierce rivals since 1883, and you can sense what it means to the fans everytime the two teams meet.
Throughout Newcastle United’s history, their home venue has been St James’ Park, the oldest and largest football stadium in North East England, as well as the sixth-largest football stadium in the United Kingdom. St James’ park was also used as a venue for both the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Between 1998 and 2000, Double tiers were added to the Milburn and Sir John Hall stands to bring the venue up to its current capacity of 52,354.
