OGC Nice is one of the oldest French football clubs playing in the Ligue 1. The club was founded in 1904 and has been known as OGC Nice since 22 December 1924 (this name stands for Olympique Gymnaste Club de Nice). The club experienced its greatest successes between 1950 and 1960, winning the Divison 1 four times and the Coupe de France twice. The club’s last great success dates back to 1997 when it won the Coupe de France for the third time.
Since Nice is located on the Côte d’Azur alongside clubs like Marseille and Monaco around the corner, one could expect great local derbies. But nothing could be further from the truth. The biggest rival of ”Les Aiglons” is SC Bastia from the island of Corsica. This derby is also known as ”Derby de la Mediterrannée.”
After playing its games at the Stade du Ray for over 86 years, OGC Nice has been playing its home games at the Allianz Riviera stadium since September 2013. The stadium can accommodate 35 to 45 thousand supporters, but can also be used for congresses and seminars. Since June 2014, the ‘National Sports Museum’ has been located in the stadium. With no less than 50,000 exhibits and 200,000 documents of French sports history, this stadium is a must visit.
