Southampton was formed in 1885 by the members of the St. Mary’s Church. The church-based roots are still a big part of the club’s identity, as evidenced by their most popular nickname: The Saints. Being one of the founding members of the Premier League, they have spent the majority of their history in the top flight since their first promotion to it in 1966; their longest continuous period was for 27 seasons between 1978 and 2005.
After setbacks and financial problems the club spent 2005 to 2012 outside of the Premier League. Southampton finally returned to the league under Nigel Adkins in the 2012/13 season, he was later replaced by Mauricio Pochettino who achieved some great results as manager.
Southampton’s main rivals are Portsmouth, with whom they play the South Coast Derby, which was first played in 1899. In more recent times, Southampton have tended to play in the Premier League, while Portsmouth is in the EFL Championship. The difference in leagues means the derby is rarely played, but the rivalry remains intense. Whenever the teams meet, fans can expect a spectacular game.
