Founded in 1878, the Everton Football Club was originally brought about by St. Domingo Church Sunday School. After two years as St. Domingo’s FC the name was changed to Everton, after a district in Liverpool. They were among the twelve founding members of the Football League, the first professional football competition in the world.
Everton FC share a fierce rivalry with Liverpool FC, as both teams are from the same city. Liverpool’s home stadium at Anfield is just over two miles away from Everton’s home at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and the two clubs battle it out in the Merseyside derby.
Hill Dickinson Stadium is the new home of Everton FC, opened in 2025 as the successor to Goodison Park. Located on the banks of the River Mersey, about 2.5 km north of Liverpool city centre, the stadium has a capacity of 52,769 spectators. This modern football venue is built on a historic dockland site and combines contemporary facilities with a steep and compact design that preserves the atmosphere of Goodison. Thanks to its location, capacity and character, the stadium is seen as a new milestone in Everton’s history.
