Welcome to Milan, one of the proud host cities of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. While Cortina and the surrounding Alpine regions will host the snow sports, Milan is the beating heart of the ice events. From figure skating to high-speed clashes in ice hockey, Milan will showcase world-class performances in iconic indoor venues. Discover the disciplines taking place in Milan and learn more about the rinks and arenas where history will be made.

    Speed Skating

    Speed Skating

at Fiera Milano Oval (within Fiera Milano Exhibition Centre)

At the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, the Fiera Milano exhibition venue will be transformed into a world-class long track speed skating arena, where athletes compete in one of the most iconic and tradition-rich sports of the Winter Games. Speed skating is all about pure speed, endurance, and technique on a 400-meter oval ice track. Skaters race two at a time in separate lanes and switch lanes each lap to ensure equal distance. The fastest time across all heats determines the final rankings—it’s a race against the clock, not direct opponents.

The competition includes individual races over 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, 5000 m (men and women), 3000 m (women) and 10,000 m (men only). The shorter distances require explosive power and precision, while the longer races demand pacing, stamina, and mental resilience.

In the Team Pursuit, two teams of three skaters race head-to-head, starting on opposite sides of the track. The time is taken when the third skater crosses the finish line. In the Mass Start, all skaters race simultaneously—tactics, positioning, and sprint timing play a major role.

With its mix of speed, endurance, and strategy, Olympic speed skating is a thrilling showcase of human performance on ice.

    Figure Skating

    Figure Skating

at Milano Ice Skating Arena (Forum Assago)

At the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, Forum Assago will be transformed into the Milano Ice Skating Arena to host five captivating figure skating events: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Artistic Pairs, Ice Dance, and the Team Competition.

In Singles events, skaters perform a short program and a free skate, showcasing jumps, spins, footwork, and choreography, judged on both technical precision and artistic expression. Artistic Pairs follow a similar format but with added complexity, including synchronized lifts, throw jumps, and intricate pair elements performed in perfect unison. Ice Dance emphasizes rhythm, musical interpretation, and intricate steps, focusing more on dance lifts and coordinated movement rather than jumps. The Team Competition brings it all together: national teams compete across all four disciplines, earning points based on placement in short and free programs, with the highest-scoring team taking gold. All events are judged using a points-based system that rewards difficulty, execution, and performance quality.

    Shorttrack

    Short track

at Milano Ice Skating Arena (Forrum Assano)

Short track speed skating at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 will be held at the Milano Ice Skating Arena, featuring intense competition across men’s, women’s, and mixed events. Races take place on a 111.12-meter oval track, much smaller than traditional long track, which makes for tight turns, fast starts, and frequent contact. Skaters compete in heats of 4 to 6 athletes, with the fastest advancing through quarterfinals, semifinals, and into the finals.

Each skater must stay within the designated track and cannot deliberately block, push, or impede others—though due to the close racing, incidental contact is common. Overtaking is allowed and often crucial, but it must be done cleanly. False starts, impeding, or cutting the track can result in disqualification.

Event distances include 500 m, 1000 m, and 1500 m for both men and women, as well as relay events: 5000 m for men, 3000 m for women, and a 2000 m mixed team relay. In relays, teams of four skaters take turns on the ice, tagging each other with a push for smooth transitions. Short track is fast, tactical, and unpredictable—one mistake or bold move can make the difference between Olympic gold and elimination.

    Ice Hockey

    Ice Hockey

at Milano Rho Arena & Milano Santa Giulia Arena

Ice Hockey at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 will take center stage in two world-class venues: the Milano Rho and Milano Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arenas. Two high-stakes tournaments will unfold—one for men, one for women.

Twelve teams will compete in the men’s tournament in fast-paced matches on a standard-sized rink, with six players per team on the ice at a time (including the goaltender). The women’s tournament will be played with 10 teams. Each game is divided into three 20-minute periods, and teams aim to outscore their opponents by firing pucks into the opposing goal while defending their own. The tournament begins with a group stage, where teams are seeded into pools and earn points for wins and draws. The top teams advance to the knockout rounds, culminating in semi-finals and the medal matches.
