Borussia Dortmund, also known as BVB, is a German football club that competes in the Bundesliga, the top tier of the German football leagues. Founded in 1909 by 18 football players from Dortmund, the club is now the second largest sports club by membership in Germany with more than 145,000 members.
The club barely avoided bankruptcy in 1929, and being an anti-Nazi oriented club during the third reich regime certainly didn’t help matters. After having proved themselves by winning the last German national championship ever held in 1963, Dortmund and 15 other clubs were invited to play in the newly formed Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund hold a long standing rivalry with Schalke 04 who are also located in the Ruhr area, This match is named the Revierderby. They also have another big rivalry with fellow German giants Bayern Munich, called Der Klassiker.
Dortmund’s stadium, originally known as Westfalenstadion, is the largest in Germany and the seventh largest in Europe. Dortmund also has the highest average attendance of any association football club in the world. The stadium was named Signal Iduna park after the insurance company Signal Iduna purchased the rights to name the stadium until 2021. This was due to financial problems Dortmund were having at the time.
The stadium has undergone several renovations to increase the capacity, including the expansion for the 2006 World Cup. In 2008, a museum about Borussia Dortmund opened up, named the Borusseum. It also houses 8,768 Solar cells on the roof of the stadium after a partnership with Q-cells, allowing it to generate up to 860,000 kWh per year.
