Olympique Lyonnais, or Olympique Lyon, had its golden era in the beginning of the millennium winning seven consecutive league titles, one of the longest streak in any of the biggest football leagues in Europe, in the first decade of this century and a time during which the words “Lyon” and “Gerland” (their old stadium) were practically synonymous to French football.
Olympique Lyonnais were founded in 1950, but the year is half-deceiving, given that the club can trace its origins back to the 19th century, and more specifically to Lyon Olympique Universitaire, which can be seen as a very early predecessor. The fifties passed with Olympique Lyonnais earning promotion to the top division and then establishing themselves as a consistent participant in the top flight.
Historically, Lyon has a healthy rivalry with fellow Ligue 1 club Saint-Étienne, whom they contest the Derby Rhône-Alpes with. Since the club’s dominance at the start of the new millennium, they have established rivalries with Marseille, Bordeaux, Paris Saint-Germain and Lille. Olympique Lyonnais used to play at the Stade de Gerland from 1950, the year of the club’s foundation. On 1st September 2008, Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas announced plans to create a new 60,000-seat stadium, tentatively called “OL Land”. The opening of the new Parc Olympique Lyonnais was on 9th January 2016. Parc Olympique Lyonnais, known for sponsorship reasons as Groupama Stadium, is a 59,186-seat stadium in Décines-Charpieu, Lyon.
The stadium was a host of UEFA Euro 2016, and was also chosen to stage the 2017 Coupe de la Ligue Final and the 2018 UEFA Europa League Final, in addition to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and football at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
