Mutua Madrid Open was first organized in 2002. From 2002 to 2008, it was a men’s-only indoor hardcourt tournament. With the opening of the Caja Magica sports complex in 2009, Mutua Madrid Open became a gravel tournament for both men and women. In 2012, it was played on blue clay court instead of red clay court. However, this was not a success and, partly due to criticism from many top players, it was changed back to red gravel in 2013.
Caja Magica is a sports complex located on the banks of the Manzanares River in Madrid. The sports complex has three courts. The main stadium has a total capacity of over 12,000 spectators. This makes it one of the larger stadiums on the ATP calendar. The other two stadiums can accommodate 3,500 and 2,500 spectators. All three stadiums have a sliding roof, which means that games can always be played regardless of weather conditions.
