The tennis complex is located near the Porte d’Auteuil in Paris. The stadium is named after the French war hero and aviation pioneer Eugene Roland Garros. The construction of the stadium complex started in 1928, at that time the stadium complex consisted of 3.5 hectares and had 5 fields. To admit more spectators on the Centre Court, it was expanded in 1979 after some renovations. The capacity was increased to 15,000 spectators. Between 1980 and 1986, the construction of 9 pitches began, including Court N°1 and the Village. The stadium complex then covered more than 5.7 hectares. Construction of the Suzanne-Lenglen site and the Club des Loges began in 1994 where the stadium covered 8.5 hectares. From 2009, there were plans to relocate the tennis complex outside Paris. In the end, an extension was chosen due to the high costs of moving. In 2020, the installation of the roof on the Philippe-Chatrier square started.
One of the features of Roland Garros is that it is always played on gravel, which consists of white limestone with a thin layer of gravel on top. In 1928 this surface was revolutionary and made it possible to drain the water from the court, something that was a big problem at the time. The recognisable red layer of gravel does need to be replaced daily during tournaments. Clay is known to be difficult to play on, as the surface makes the game a lot slower and the ball bounces higher on the court. Roland Garros is perhaps the most challenging tennis tournament in the world because of the surface of the court alone. The atmosphere of Roland Garros is incredibly special. The cheers of “Allez!” and the “Olé!” at near misses or the tense decisions of the referee make attending a match unique.
