Facts of the stadium and Gelbe Wand

    About the stadium
Since 1974, BVB Dortmund have played their home matches in the breathtaking Signal Iduna Park. The stadium is named after its sponsor and is actually called Westfalenstadion. People still refer to it as the Westfalenstadion. The stadium is located 4 kilometres south of the city centre of Dortmund and can contain around 81,000 Dortmund supporters. This makes the stadium one of the top 5 biggest football stadiums in Europe.

    Must-go stadium by Gelbe Wand
When we think of Signal Iduna Park, we think of the Gelbe Wand. It makes the stadium, the club, the atmosphere and the Dortmund supporters unique and even world famous. Here are a few facts about the yellow wall in Dortmund:

    • About 25,000 supporters fit on the Gelbe Wand.
    • The entire stand consists of standing places. The standing areas on the south stand give a feeling that a seat cannot offer. The Gelbe Wand is an ode to the true experience of football. You don’t watch football sitting down or behind glass, but standing upright in an active posture, according to the CEO of Borussia Dortmund.
    • The Gelbe Wand is the most famous stand in the world.
    • The Yellow Wall is the largest standing grandstand in all of Europe.
“You’ll never walk alone” is sung at the top of your lungs before the match. That’s right, this is Liverpool’s song. The Liverpool club song is one of the most famous football songs and has been copied by clubs like Feyenoord, Dortmund, Celtic and many others.
    • The Times proclaimed Signal Iduna Park the best football stadium in the world.

    What is the ‘Gelbe Wand’?

When you visit a Dortmund match, one thing stands out: the ‘Gelbe Wand’. The huge BVB stadium can hold around 81,000 Dortmund supporters, 25,000 of whom are cheering in the most famous stand. For those who have no idea, the Gelbe Wand is the most famous standing grandstand in the world.

There is no other club with supporters who are so loyal and fanatical. The atmosphere on the south stand is impressive and magical. For 90 minutes, you can count on deafening noise, tifos, songs, large flags, bratwurst, beer and more beer.

When Borussia Dortmund became more successful in the 1990s, the number of seats was doubled. From the largest stand in the world, 25,000 Dortmund supporters make an imposing appearance. Throughout the match, the unit performs and creates an oasis of sound.

The origin of the yellow wall

The history of the Gelbe Wand is rather mysterious. Who exactly came up with the name is still unknown to this day. The stand was first called the Gelbe Wand in 2005. A fanatical group of supporters in Dortmund had placed a gigantic banner with the text “Die Gelbe Wand Dortmund” above the south stand. That is how the name ‘Die Gelbe Wand’ seems to have come about.

The name is actually very logical. If you go to a Dortmund match and look at the south stand, it is yellow, steep and huge. The yellow wall is therefore a very appropriate name.

    The world’s largest tifos

Football fans support clubs in different ways. A tifo action is one of the most impressive and special expressions of support in the world of football.

You could say that Borussia Dortmund has an army of supporters, the most legendary legions of supporters, not only in the Bundesliga but in whole Europe. The supporters regularly impress their opponents with an impressive tifo, especially against rival Bayern Munich. The atmosphere on the south stand is overwhelming. You can count on a goosebump moment, because it is certainly magical! The impressive atmosphere actions are organised days before the match and always remain a hot topic after the match. Because such a tifo delivers amazing images!

Famous Dortmund tifos: the supporter with the binoculars, the skull, danke Jürgen and the cup. Of course, there are many many more!

    Diehard supporters

On the Gelbe Wand, you will only find diehard supporters. It is very difficult to get in, as the wall consists entirely of season ticket holders, and Borussia Dortmund’s season tickets are extremely rare.

Borussia Dortmund is the club with the highest average number of spectators in Europe. It can be said that Dortmund has the most loyal supporters. Almost everyone had renewed their season ticket in the 2015/2016 football year. 66 of the 55,000 season ticket holders had cancelled it that year. That says it all!

The waiting list for a season ticket is 5 years with any luck. Many fans may never be able to get a season ticket. A ‘dauerkarte’, also known as a season ticket, on the Gelbe Wand costs 219 euros. Germany’s second most expensive club after SC Paderborn

There is a lot of demand from the Netherlands and Belgium for Dortmund season tickets. Currently, Borussia Dortmund has a loyal following with over 50,000 season ticket holders. For some matches it is difficult or even impossible to get Dortmund tickets through the free sale system.
