Seville football leagues

Football in Spain has several levels. The highest division is the Primera División, also known as La Liga. This league has 20 clubs and every year the three lowest-ranked teams are relegated. The second level in Spain is called the Segunda División A. This is followed by the third level in Spain, which since this season is called the Primera Federación and consists of two regional leagues.

The fourth professional division in Spain is the Segunda Federación and consists of four parallel leagues. As the fifth level, they still have the Tercera Federación in Spain. This is the last level that is considered professional football. After this, the higher amateur divisions begin. There are a total of five football teams in Seville operating at a professional level. Two of these play at the highest level. The other three clubs play in the Segunda Federación, the fourth level.

2. Real Betis Balompié

Real Betis Balompié, better known as Real Betis, was founded on 12 September 1907 by some footballers from Sevilla FC who separated from that club. Real Betis’ greatest success dates back to 1935, when the club won its first and so far only national title. After alternating periods, the club from southern Seville has been a stable mid-tier player at the highest level in Spain in recent years.

During the ‘Seville Derby’ (Real Betis v Sevilla FC) they play their arch-rival. The first derby between Real Betis and Sevilla FC took place in 1915, where Sevilla FC won in an exciting game (4-3). Since then, this city derby has been a charged match full of spectacle and passion, where underdog Betis often manages to rise above themselves.

  • 3. CD Utrera

Club Deportivo Utrera plays in the fourth tier in Spain. It is a professional football club located in a suburb of Seville. Utrera is a small town southeast of the capital. The club was founded in 1946 and has since played at various levels. At their peak, CD Utrera played two seasons at Spain’s third tier, the Segunda División B.

    4. Sevilla Atlético

Football club Sevilla Atlético is the second team of Sevilla FC and has its own stadium where it plays its matches, Estadio Jesús Navas. The aim of this club is not necessarily to achieve sporting success, but to train young talents for the first team. The club was founded in 1950, but was not incorporated as a subsidiary by Sevilla until the 1958/1959 season.

Currently, the team plays at the fourth level in Spain, but that has not always been the case. They have even played five seasons at the second level in the past. The Sevilla football team often lets talents move on to the big Sevilla FC, of which Sergio Ramos is probably the most famous player.

    5. Betis Deportivo Balompié

Until the 1960s, Real Betis did not have a second team. At that time, it was customary to stable young talents at local clubs in Seville. Betis Deportivo Balompié was the last Seville football club founded, in 1963. Back then, it was still known under the name ‘Triana Balompié’. Real Betis’ second team, like Sevilla Atlético, is not allowed to participate in the Copa del Rey. In addition, only players under 23 years old are allowed to switch between the first and second teams.
