MotoGP fans take note: the 2023 MotoGP calendar is complete! Francesco Bagnaia managed to become champion last season against all odds: following a crash in the German GP, he was 91 points behind the top of the standings, but he managed to score 5 GP wins afterwards, totaling 7 the whole season, thus securing the title. Get ready for an amazing new racing year! This season will include two new races: the Grands Prix of India and Kazakhstan. In addition, one of the four Spanish circuits has been removed from the calendar for this year. From now on, one of these four circuits will be absent from the calendar each season, in turn. For this year, this means that there will be no race at Motorland Aragon. Let’s look at the races one by one.

For the first time in 15 years, the first Grand Prix of the year will not be held in Qatar, as this Portuguese circuit will have the honour of opening the MotoGP season! The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is a 4.692km race circuit in the municipality of Portimão, Portugal. The construction of this circuit was completed in October 2008, so it is relatively new. The circuit is approved by both the FIM (motorsport federation) and the FIA (motorsport federation). This season, it was Francesco Bagnaia who secured a place on top of the podium at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Deemed by many as one of the best tracks on the MotoGP calendar, this circuit has a bit of everything: fast, smooth corners and sections that offer various overtaking opportunities. The final section of the circuit gives riders the opportunity to go full throttle in their pursuit of glory. It may be a bit of an adventure to get there, but fans and riders all agree that it is worth it, not only for the fantastic atmosphere, but also (and especially) for the exciting racing that Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo consistently delivers. To this day, Marc Marquez is the rider who secured the most wins at this circuit.

This MotoGP hosts the US Grand Prix annually in April. Some of its corners are inspired by iconic circuits such as Silverstone’s Becketts corner and the infamous Turn 8 at Istanbul Park. This circuit is a popular attraction, with a 77m-high observation tower offering stunning views of the Austin skyline. Austin is known as the ‘live music capital of the world’, so it is no surprise that the Circuit of The Americas hosts high-profile music events every year! Big names like Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars have appeared on stage in recent years. This season, Francesco Bagnaia set a new fastest lap record; will he manage to break the record again next year?

Le Mans did host the 1000th Grand Prix in MotoGP history. Although this circuit was consistently part of the MotoGP calendar for several decades, it had to take a few years off after a serious accident involving Spanish rider Alberto Puig in 1995. Le Mans returned in 2000 after several improvements were made to ensure rider safety. The 4.2-kilometre circuit consists of five left turns, nine right turns and a long 674-metre straight. The venue can accommodate 100,000 spectators. Jorge Lorenzo is the rider who secured the highest number of wins at the French Grand Prix.

Sachsenring, home to the German MotoGP, has a rich and longstanding history with motorbike racing dating back to 1927. Located near Chemnitz in Saxony, the Sachsenring delivers many exciting races. The track is only 3.67 km long, making it the shortest circuit on the MotoGP calendar, but its tight turns also make it one of the slowest circuits. Last season Fabio Quartararo won the race and rode the fastest lap on the Sachsenring, will someone beat him to it this season?

Kazakhstan will be the 30th country to host a MotoGP. The Sokol circuit is located in Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty. Silverstone is home to British motorsport every year. This circuit is a Mecca for British motorsport fans and has undergone numerous changes over the years to reduce speed and increase safety. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Silverstone was used for British MotoGP and then it disappeared from the calendar for a while. Silverstone made its comeback on the MotoGP calendar In 2010. Last season, Alex Rins set a new fastest race lap time, will anyone manage to improve on that this year already?

Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli is the home of the San Marino MotoGP. The 4.20-kilometre circuit has six left turns, 10 right turns with a longest straight of 530 metres. Although some say the new Misano lacks the challenges and complexity of the old one, there’s plenty of hard acceleration in low gears and special overtaking opportunities to keep riders on their toes. The venue can accommodate 100,000 fans. Dani Pedrosa holds the fastest race lap and, among the current riders, Jorge Lorenzo is the one with the most wins to his name at this circuit.

The Indonesian Grand Prix was on the calendar for only two seasons before, in 1996 and 1997. Last season’s race was shortened from 27 to 20 laps due to concerns about track conditions. Marc Márquez was then unable to take part in the race after a crash in the warm-up left him with a concussion. Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira eventually finished 1st.
